Steve Arendt

Mr. Arendt is a Vice President of ABSG Consulting Inc. – Process Industries and Organizational Performance Assurance Center. He was formerly a co-founder and President of JBF Associates, Inc. He has over 30 years experience in chemical process safety and risk management and has performed hundreds of process safety and security analyses, risk assessments, audits, and accident investigations on a variety of oil, gas, chemical and related industry processes.

In 2006, Mr. Arendt led ABS Consulting’s project to provide support for the BP Independent Safety Review Panel (Baker Panel) evaluation of PSM effectiveness, process safety culture, and corporate oversight of BP’s five U.S. refineries.

Recently, Mr. Arendt has led process safety audits and culture evaluations for offshore E&P companies covering over 80 platforms and FPSOs, and FSOs, and for downstream refining, chemical, pulp and paper, and pharmaceutical companies involving 70 plants.

Mr. Arendt is a widely published author, having over 50 articles, guides, and books to his credit on PSM and risk management topics, including:

He has recently conducted several industry surveys on PSM "best practices," obtaining information from over 70 companies, which was used in an industry "PSM best practices workshop" sponsored by API. Mr. Arendt is a member of several safety related professional societies and is very active with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Center for Chemical Process Safety. Steve was made a CCPS Fellow in 2008.

Since 1989, Mr. Arendt has worked with several industry groups to develop technical positions dealing with OSHA's process safety management regulation (29 CFR 1910.119) and EPA's risk management program rule (40 CFR Part 68). He has been an active participant in these rulemakings, providing testimony at the public hearing for both regulations. Mr. Arendt has served as a moderator for numerous industry workshops on the OSHA PSM and EPA RMP regulations, and is a frequent speaker at conferences involving chemical accident prevention and process safety management activities.

Mr. Arendt was awarded the 2006 Merit Award from the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center, recognizing significant contributions to the advancement of education, research, and service activities related to process safety concepts and/or technologies.

Mr. Arendt received a Master of Engineering degree from the University of Tennessee in 1977, and is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Tennessee.

J. Sanuel Armacanqui

J. Samuel Armacanqui is a Petroleum Engineer with a PhD in Reservoir Engineering both from the Mining Academy Freiberg, Germany. He has Postdoctoral Studies in Project & Business Management from the Clausthal University (1990). After graduation he worked for Major Service Companies (Schlumberger & Reda) and Oil Operators (JV Conoco-PDVSA & PDO). Besides his Reservoir Engineering background he has over 15 years of experience in Oil Production Engineering both at desk and field, including Artificial Lift and Contract Management (Pre and Post Award). He has worked in different oil field environments (light to extra Heavy Oil, low inflow & gassy wells) in South America -10 years in Venezuela & Argentina and is since 2001 in the Middle East with Petroleum Development Oman where he is Head of the Team in charge of the contractual management and preparation of Major Contracts for Provision of ESP Systems (Electrical Submersible Pumps).

William “Jack” Jackson

William “Jack” Jackson is the President as well as an Independent Safety Consultant with Zion Safety Consulting, a consulting company he founded in 2007. “Jack” Jackson is chiefly responsible for organizational strategies, developmental programs, and the vision behind Zion Safety Consulting Inc. He originates from Tulsa, Oklahoma, yet attended college in Missouri at Lincoln University, where he earned a BS in Mechanical Technology, and was a 3 year letterman on the Universities Football team. He completed Basic Training in Fort Knox, Kentucky while attending Lincoln.

Jack was formally employed for 19 years with Johnson Controls Inc. While at Johnson Controls he held several positions with the company. He began his career in the Production and Operations portion of the business. He later became involved with the Safety department. Where he helped the local facility in Jefferson City attain a world class safety record. This facility reached 10 years without a lost time accident in 2005. This record is still standing today. They were able to attain this mark by training as well as changing the culture in which safety was practiced in the facility.

Jack relocated to San Antonio and joined Avanzar Interior Technologies in 2005, while the site was still under construction. His responsibilities including overseeing the construction safety phase of the project. Once construction completed he continued on to develop the safety system for the facility as well as the safety program manual for the facility. He set the tone early on for the direction of the Safety culture within Avanzar. He developed a work conditioning program to prepare team members to become industrial athletes.

Jack, is also know as Coach Jack to some. After a failed attempt to make it into the NFL, Jack began coaching Semi Professional football for 6 years, working with two different teams. He lead the Springfield Rifles to the National semi final game two years straight, and was named NAFL defensive coordinator of the year in 2002.

Jack used his experience working in the fast pace world of the automotive manufacturing, his short military experience, as well as building championship quality teams on the football field to develop a safety concept that teaches participants of his courses that “Safety is always first”.

Jack joined the Bill Sims Company in 2007 as a Behavior Change Consultant after falling in love with the concepts of the program Bill Sims presented to him in Phoenix. He recently spoke at the Region IV VPPP Conference in San Antonio.

Jackson is also the author of “The “I” in Team…The Star within” A liberating interactive presentation designed to make participants look inside themselves through a five point process. It teaches, that the growth of the team lays first within the individual stars on the team, and that each one must shine.

Jitu C. Patel

Mr. Jitu C. Patel is currently a Senior Safety Consultant in the USA with nearly 40 years of experience in Safety, Health & Environment field with chemical, oil & gas corporations.

For 21 years, Mr. Patel has provided health & safety professional services to Saudi Aramco; a major Oil & Gas producing & processing corporation in Saudi Arabia. He supervised and directed a team of Safety Engineers providing safety support to one of the world’s largest refineries at Ras Tanura, gas gathering and recovery plants at Berri & Juaymah and also to their associated modernization and expansion projects.

Mr. Patel provided technical training and conducted research for 15 years in the field of fire & explosion, health and environment safety issues at a heavy chemical manufacturing company owned by UK Oil companies, for safe processing, storage and world-wide distribution of company products, such as, Chlorine, Bromine, halogenated hydrocarbons, Anti-Knock Lead additives for gasoline, Hydrogen, Caustic and Acids.

Mr. Patel prepared many safety audit reports at heavy chemical and oil & gas corporations. He developed and conducted Fire & Safety seminars for the benefit of Safety & Fire Prevention engineers and line management staff of industry operations, maintenance & engineering organizations. He is an author and presenter of many technical & safety presentations.

Mr. Patel assisted in developing Safety Engineering Standards for Middle East countries. He contributed in preparing, reviewing and coordinating documents dealing with Corporate General Instructions, Safe Operating Instructions, Fire & Safety Engineering standards, Accountability Reports, and also in Business and Operating Plans. He has published several international publications in the J. of Comb. & Flames, USA; J. of Chem. Eng., UK; Gulf Area Safety and has presented them at International conferences.

Mr. Patel acted as a member or a chairman of many incident investigations. He was a member of the Safe Operations and Laboratory Safety Committees at Associated Octel Co., UK and Saudi Aramco. He was a member of the Toxic & Flammable Gas Detector Sensor Development Committee of Users & Manufacturers at the SIRA Institute, London.

Mr. Patel was a Steering/Organizing Committee member, speaker and a session chairman of the 5th, 6th & 7th Professional Development Conferences organized by the ASSE Middle East Chapter. He is currently appointed as a Senior Board Advisor to the Executive Board of the Arizona ASSE Chapter. He was a member and a speaker of the International Advisory Committee of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy 20th Anniversary Process Safety Conference – December 1-3, 2004, organized by the Indian Institute of Technology, India. He was a moderator and a speaker at the Safety Expo-2005, 2006 & 2007 conferences by the SCF of Arizona and ASSE Arizona Chapter. He was a speaker at the ASSE’s PDC in June 2006 at Seattle, WA.

Mr. Patel has a BS (Honors) degree in Chemistry & Physics and a Master of Philosophy degree in Energy & Fuel Science from Leeds University, UK. He is a Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA) for Health & Safety (Board of Environmental Professional Certification, USA). He is a Professional Member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and a founder member and three times President of the ASSE Middle East Chapter. Waddah Shihab Ghanem Al Hashemi

Waddah’s background is an Environmental Engineer, graduated from University of Wales, College Cardiff. Has worked as a consultant at the start of his career and then moved in to the Oil Industry to the first Oil Refinery in Dubai, UAE, ENOC Processing Company LLC during the Construction and Pre-commissioning phases. After commissioning Waddah became the EHS Supervisor/Coordinator and was in charge of all Environmental, Health and Safety as well as Fire Protection issues aspects of the Refinery Operations, Maintenance and Engineering. Whilst working he studied intensively and obtained two Diplomas in Environmental Management and Safety Management from the UK respectively. He holds a distinction level MSc in Environmental Science the University of the UAE.

Waddah has varied base of experience and working knowledge of environmental management systems and pollution control; fire and safety compliance and design reviews; occupational health management systems development and administration; EHS Management Systems Auditing; Job Safety Task Analysis; TQM and other HSE specificities. He has presented to date more than 50 presentations and technical papers at various local, regional and international conferences and forums.

Waddah now heads as the Chief EHSQ Compliance Officer for the ENOC Group. Ghanem chairs and is a member of various EHSQ based Committees. He, in late 2004 become also became in charge of Group Quality Compliance. Waddah is an executive committee member of the Emirates Safety Group, an advisor on the HCT Environmental Sciences Program Committee and is also a member of the Petroleum and Lube specification Committee for the Government of the UAE. Waddah also recently became a member of the Dubai CSR Committee. Waddah has also recently completed an Executive MBA through Bradford University in the UK in which he specialized in organizational safety behavior.

Waddah has built up a fully functional integrated EHS Compliance Department for the Emirates National Oil Company with 4 person team to now a 30 person team in a matter of 6 years. He is also the Chairman of the ENOC Wellness and Social Activities Program Committee for the whole organisation which has more than 5000 employees.

Hany Abdel Aziz

Hany Abdel Aziz is the HSE, (Occupational Health, Safety and Environment), Expert/General Manager of the largest Gas / Condensate producers in Egypt, Rashid Petroleum Co (Rashpetco). His over 28 years experience in Gas and Oil business includes 16 years in SUEZ OIL COMPANY, SUCO, the main crude oil, natural gas and LPG (Joint Venture Egyptian/ German Co.), 9 years in ALEXANDRIA PETROLEUM COMPANY the refinery & lube oils producer, working in the area of Q.C. and chemical treatment then HSE activities.

Hany is a SPE member, SPE lecturer, (2001-2002 SPE program, Egypt branch). He is also an author and co-author of some SPE and local technical and HSE papers. He is DNV and Moody International approved OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 Auditor, OSHA and NEBOSH certified. He is a competent Instructor for HSE Training & Consultancy. He was nominated by SUCO & Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation for one of OAPEC technical posts as (Petroleum Industries Expert). He obtained a non-degree fellowship, (1983-1984) to do some research in chemistry at the University of Texas at El Paso, (UTEP), U.S.A. The fellowship was sponsored by the U.S. government. Hany holds a B.Sc. in chemistry from Alexandria university, 1977, a High Diploma in Quality Management and a Master of Science Degree in Quality Management from the Arab Academy for Science and Technology.

Dr. Omar Shams is the Manager of General and Mechanical maintenance at Dubai Natural Gas Company Ltd (DUGAS) which is part of the ENOC Group. Omar has worked for DUGAS for 24 years and is responsible for all aspects of Mechanical Maintenance for the DUGAS facility onshore and offshore. He is also the President of the Gas Turbine Users International (GTUI) which is a non-profit organization head quartered in the USA. Omar holds a PhD. Form the University of Bath in the UK.

Ted Lemmers joined Kepner-Tregoe (KT) in 2008, having previously been with Stork Industry Services’s Business Unit, Stork Asset Management Solutions, a leading maintenance consultancy for five years. His background includes posts in sales, marketing, maintenance management and business improvement in Oil & Gas, Energy, Metal, Food and Finance companies.

He joined the Industrial Practice of KT Europe, and has a particular interest in Continuous Business Improvement. Ted who is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt specializes in improving production performance and change management. He has led projects in Europe, Middle East and North America covering Strategy Formulation, Continuous Business Improvement, Change Management, Maintenance Management, Shutdown & Turn Around Management with clients ranging from Shell to ING Bank. David Moore is the President and CEO of the AcuTech Consulting Group, a security, process safety, and emergency management consulting firm based in Alexandria, VA. Mr. Moore is an expert on chemical and energy process security management and process safety. He is actively involved in consulting and training assignments to industrial facilities and Governments worldwide. Mr. Moore has consulted since 1987to many of the world’s largest corporations.

Mr. Moore was the project manager of the AIChE CCPS® “Guidelines for Managing and Analyzing the Security Vulnerabilities of Fixed Chemical Sites”, the security guidelines for the American Petroleum Institute (API), and the API/National Petrochemical and Refiners Association Security Vulnerability Assessment Methodology. He is the lead author of the 2009 edition of the AIChE CCPS® “Inherently Safer Chemical Processes; A Lifecycle Approach”.

He has served in various capacities to advise the U. S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on chemical security management and vulnerability assessment, including Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards. He served as the Sector Coordinator for petroleum, chemical, and LNG for the) initiative to develop a common vulnerability analysis standard ‘Risk Analysis and Management for Critical Asset Protection (RAMCAP).

Mr. Moore was formerly a Senior Engineer with Mobil Corporation in Princeton, NJ; and a Fire Protection Engineer with the National Fire Protection Association in Boston, MA. Mr. Moore is a Registered Professional Engineer. He is a board member for the Energy Security Council. He serves on the AIChE Center for Chemical Process Safety Technical Steering Committee, and the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center at Texas A&M University. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the National Fire Protection Association, and the American Society of Industrial Security. He has an MBA, (NYU-1987), and a B.Sc., Fire Protection Engineering (University of Md.-1979).
